Shawls are an elegant attire that is worn by Indian men as well as women. Shawls are used in winter to keep a person warm and cosy. Different types of shawls are available in the Indian market.

However, pashmina shawls or cashmere shawls are very popular among them. These shawls are excellently made of premium quality fabric and such shawls are almost eight times warmer than the ones which are obtained from the sheep’s wool.

Cashmere shawls can be used at other times of the year as well. Embroidery is a widely used art these days and if you wish to, you can design your shawls with different varieties of embroidery designs.

Following are four different varieties of embroidery designs that you can use in your shawls-

Sozni embroidery- This type of embroidery is usually done on Pashmina shawls by using thin needles and silk threads to create patterns of floral or paisley on the stoles and shawls.

The motifs are extremely colorful and they are meticulously hand-embroidered in a way that the fabric is rarely visible. This kind of embroidery requires a lot of hard work and patience and it may take up to two or three years for getting completed. The craftsmen working on these shawls devote six hours a day to this.

Aari embroidery-
This is one of the very tedious forms of needlework and is a specialty of the Kashmiri artisans. The artisans use hooked needles that are also known as Tambour and thereby intrinsically create concentric loops.

The fine art of Aari is prevailing in India since the 16th century. It mainly comprises highly refined floral motifs on royal garments. Due to its embellished look, aari embroidery is also done on cashmere shawls.

Kantha embroidery
The art of this embroidery originated in West Bengal and was used for the pile of worn-out silk as well as muslin cloths which were stitched by the women together in the form of a drape.

These days, this art is carried out with simple running stitches along the edge of the piece of cloth or the fabric. Mesmerizing motifs of flowers, birds, animals, and other shapes of geometry are made on stoles, scarves, or any other piece of cloth.

Tilla embroidery-
It is luxury clothing on its own. It gives a royal look to the garment on which it is being done. This kind of embroidery is done using golden threads which can be used for embroidering bold paisleys along with beautiful florets all over the shawl where the embroidery is being done.

Tilla embroidery is done using very thin needles which makes the piece of work a very regal affair.

There are also various other types of embroideries that are done on shawls and scarves making the look of the same wonderful and elegant. Hence, pashmina shawls can be given a magnificent look with the help of effective and minute embroidery works.
