Proper flow meter maintenance often increases the lifespan of flow measurement equipment. Flow calibration and recalibration are maintenance activities needed to make these instruments durable. In this post, we discuss how to properly calibrate a water flow meter. Keep reading to gain more knowledge.

Any measurement tool requires calibration to function properly after a while. Flow meters are among the tools that require calibration after working for a long while. When flow meters work, they tend to lose accuracy after a long while. This leads to inconsistencies in flow rate measurement. Flow meters are industrial instruments designed to measure the flow rate of fluids and gaseous matter. Since most of these tools have moving parts, they tend to lose accuracy. This is due to wear and tear.

Proper flow rate readings increase profitability and productivity. Regular checks are needed to ensure that flow meters are working at optimum levels. If there are any inconsistencies, the flow meter requires recalibration to make it work properly.

Most companies that manufacture flow meters provide flow calibration and recalibration. This is often given as an after-sales offer. However, if the flow meter manufacturer does not offer this service, the user will have to perform in-house calibration.

What is Flow Calibration?

Flowmeter calibration is the act of testing and comparing readings given by a set of flow meters to check for accuracy and repeatability. It is a maintenance process for ensuring that flow meters work as expected. What guides the user when carrying out calibration are preset measurement standards. Industries that demand higher levels of accuracy should have regular flow meter calibration to ensure proper flow rate accuracy is not compromised. Such sectors include manufacturing or production plants that process oil, gas, food and pharmaceutical products.

Flow calibration is often done soon after manufacturing the device. This ensures that there are no flaws in the flow meter and that it works as expected. Most companies that produce flow meters prefer having their flow meters calibrated by independent facilities built for calibrating flow measurement instruments. Such facilities will ensure that proper flow meter calibration is achieved.

How to perform flow meter calibration?

Calibrating a flow meter is to ensure it conforms to universal flow measurement standards. There are various options to perform flow calibration. This will depend on the type of flow meter you intend to use. Let’s look at the several flow meter calibration procedures.

Master Meter Calibration Procedure

The calibration process begins by measuring the flow rate using the flow meter undergoing calibration. A particular flow meter is often used when performing the master meter calibration procedure. This flow meter is called the master flow meter. Once it produces flow rate readings, the provider will compare the readings from the master meter. Necessary adjustments are made if the readings don’t match. The adjustments will continue until the readings match.

Gravimetric Calibration Procedure

One of the most cost-effective ways of carrying out flow meter calibration is gravimetric calibration. If you use your flow meter in oil and water purification, this type of flow calibration will produce the best result. These are the steps required in gravimetric calibration:

  • The test meter is filled up with fluid. It is weighed as the fluid flows through the flow meter for 60 seconds.
  • The calibration scale will give out the accurate weight of the fluid used to test the flow meter.
  • Once the testing process ends, the fluid is drained into a container.
  • The volumetric rate of the aliquot is produced by dividing the test duration by the fluid’s volumetric rate.
  • Necessary adjustments are made once the calculated flow rate and the meter’s flow rate are compared.

Conclusion

If you want your flow meter to produce accurate results for long, regular flow calibration is necessary. Since there are several kinds of flow calibration, you need to choose one that matches your flow meter needs. Most flow meter manufacturers perform flow meter calibration for their clients. Other companies prefer calibration done by professional facilities built specifically for flow meter calibration processes.
