The process of covering up that area with a splint is known as the splinting procedure. Splinting techniques vary on the site of the injury. Splinting is a technique to help heal broken bones, acute muscle injuries, and chronic strains and sprains. The terms strain and sprains are used together, but they are different. When the band of tissue that connects two bones gets injured, the injury is known as a sprain. When the muscles that attach to a bone get hurt, the injury is known as strain.

Splints help hold two muscles and bones together in a place while they heal.

What are the types of splints?

What material are splints made up of?

They are made up of two materials:

  • Plaster

How does splinting help in healing

  • It helps deal with the swelling. The swelling will tend to decrease in 3 to 4 days.
  • It helps you make gentle movements to prevent the stiffness of muscles.
  • Apply ice to your splint. Apply it overall, and not in just one place.
  • Keep your injured arm or foot above your heart. Use a pillow for this purpose. It will help with the swelling.

When you need to see a doctor

  • If you feel numbness in your foot or arm.
  • You can’t move your toes and fingers.
  • If you experience a burning and stinging feeling. See a doctor immediately if you are noticing increased swelling.

How to take care of your splint

  • Keep it dry.
  • Avoid itching.
  • Don’t pull out the splint’s padding.
  • If it gets cracked, get a new one.
